Washington & Lee University
Sports Information Internship (posted 7/8/02)

Sports Information Intern: Washington and Lee University, an NCAA Division III school in Lexington, Va., is seeking qualified candidates for the intern position of assistant sports information director. The position is for the academic year with a maximum of three years. 
 
Qualifications:  Candidates should possess strong communication and writing skills, knowledge of college athletics, have prior experience in the field, and be willing to work long hours and weekends.  Knowledge of Macintosh computer systems, desktop publishing (PageMaker), Dreamweaver, and Stat Crew statistical systems preferred. Bachelor’s degree required. 
 
Responsibilities:  Duties include handling all media relations responsibilities for several of W&L’s 23 intercollegiate sports, including men’s and women’s soccer, field hockey, baseball, women’s lacrosse, and women’s basketball. 
 
Compensation:  Stipend is $16,000 for the first year with a $1,000 increase each year thereafter. Housing assistance and health benefits also included.

OLD DOMINION UNIVERSITY
Sports Information Internship (posted 5/13/02)


Old Dominion is seeking to fill the internship position in the Sports Information office. ODU is an NCAA Division I institution with 16 intercollegiate sports, located in Norfolk, Virginia, and a member of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Qualifications:  Bachelor's degree with experience working in collegiate sports information preferred. Applicants should possess strong writing skills, proficiency in computer programs, word processing, statistical programs and the ability to successfully manage multiple tasks.

Responsibilities:   Assist in daily operations of the sports information office and be directly responsible for sports as assigned by the director. Basic duties include writing press releases, composing media guides, posting releases and statistics on the website, and preparing game programs for home events. Selected team travel.

Compensation:  $12,500 (length of employment: August 1, 2002 through May 31, 2003)

Job Description

Provides support and assistance relative to media relations, publications, events, internal communications, public information, publicity and promotional activities on behalf of the Sports Information Department in athletics.

Responsible for production of media guides, programs and news releases, and maintenance of files and statistics related to the respective sports.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Contributes written material to the official athletics Web site and to hokiesports -the newspaper relative to sports and events. Public address experience helpful. Must be willing to work evenings and weekends.

Qualifications

Bachelor degree required, with a major in communications, sports management or a related field preferred (or fulfilling work requirements to obtain degree); computer skills using various software packages required; experience working with collegiate sports coaching staffs preferred; news-style/feature writing and  experience working in a collegiate Sports Information Department preferred; experience with Stat Crew Systems and PageMaker software helpful; knowledge of volleyball (ability to score volleyball and to “call” a game for the computer) required; knowledge of lacrosse helpful.

General Information

The internship term generally begins in July and ends at the end of May.
The job pays $1,000 per month for the 10-month term of the internship.
