
FARMVILLE, Va. – Randolph-Macon College sophomore Megan Silva has been selected as Player of the Year, and Eastern Mennonite University head coach Richard McElwee is the Coach of the Year, in voting by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association for the 2004 College Division All-State Women’s Basketball Team. 2003-04 VaSID College Division Women's Basketball All-State Team Silva, a 5-6 guard from Glen Allen, averaged 19.4 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.7 rebounds while shooting 43% from the field and 67% at the free throw line. She led the Yellow Jackets to a 20-8 record and the squad’s second-straight trip to the ODAC Tournament finals. For her efforts, Silva earned ODAC Player of the Year and All-ODAC 1st-Team honors. She was also named to the D3hoops.com All-South Region and the ODAC Championships All-Tournament teams. Silva has already surpassed 1,000 career points in just two seasons at Randolph-Macon. McElwee led Eastern Mennonite to a 25-4 mark and into the sectional semifinals of the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Royals were this year’s ODAC regular season champions and the league’s tournament champions, marking the first time a head coach has won the tournament in his first season at the helm. Joining Silva on the VaSID 1st-Team were Division III Christopher Newport senior Amber Hallman, NAIA Virginia-Wise freshman Sarah Helton, Division III Eastern Mennonite sophomore Laura Ludholtz, and Division II Longwood junior Marita Meldere. Hallman averaged a double-double of 16.0 points along with 10.0 rebounds for the Captains (21-9). Helton, the AAC freshman of the year, averaged 18.0 points and 8.7 rebounds for the Highland Cavaliers (15-15). Ludholtz scored 16.0 points and grabbed 8.2 rebounds a game for the Royals. Meldere, the 2003 VaSID player of the year, averaged a double-double of 16.6 points and 12.3 rebounds for the Lancers (17-9). Silva and Meldere are repeat 1st-Team VaSID selections from a year ago. The VaSID 2nd-Team includes USCAA Apprentice School senior Anita Allen, Eastern Mennonite sophomore Carrie Grandstaff, Division II Virginia Union senior Danielle Hoggard, Christopher Newport senior Tomorrow Lofton, and Division III Lynchburg senior Abby Pyzik. Hoggard is a repeat 2nd-Team selection, while Allen earned 1st-Team honors last season.
