
HARRISONBURG, Va. – Virginia sophomore Kelly Hammond and coach Steve Swanson Monday (April 26) received the top awards for the 2003 Virginia Sports Information Directors Association University Division All-State Women’s Soccer Team. Hammond, a midfielder, was named the state player of the year and Swanson the state coach of the year. 2003 VaSID University Division Women's Soccer All-State Team Hammond was an NSCAA All-America second team honoree and a finalist for Soccer Buzz National Player of the Year. Swanson led Virginia to a 12-5-4 record, and his team advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. Sports information directors from university and college division programs throughout Virginia took part in the all-state voting. An all-state first and second team were selected in addition to the player and coach of the year. Virginia had six players selected, William and Mary four, Virginia Commonwealth three, James Madison two and George Mason, Liberty, Old Dominion, Radford, Richmond, Virginia Military and Virginia Tech one each. First-team forwards selected were VCU junior Jen Parsons, Radford junior Nikki Porter and William and Mary junior Taline Tahmassian. Midfielders on the first team were Hammond, Virginia Tech senior Emily Barnhart, Virginia sophomore Sarah Huffman and Virginia Commonwealth senior Leah Robinson. First-team defenders chosen included VCU senior Prue Cormie, Virginia junior Gillian Hatch and freshman Becky Sauerbrunn, and JMU junior Katy Swindells. George Mason junior Sarah Coughlin was selected as first-team goalkeeper.
