Averett's Carrington; W&L's Snyder Earn Top All-State Volleyball Honors
 

DANVILLE, Va. – Averett’s Courtney Carrington was selected as the Virginia College Division Volleyball Player of the Year, while Washington & Lee’s Bryan Snyder was named Coach of the Year by the Virginia College Sports Information Directors, it was announced Friday.

Carrington, a senior outside hitter from Yadkinville, NC, earned 2003 USA South Conference Player of the Year honors after she helpedAverett's Courtney Carrington the Cougars to a 31-10 overall record and a conference tournament championship.  She averaged 2.99 kills per game, but was also a solid defender, while passing 2.59 digs an outing.  Carrington was named to the All-USA South Tournament Team and was selected to the All-VaSID second team in 2002.  She finished her career with 991 kills and 1,186 digs.

Snyder guided W&L to a 35-4 overall record, an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship, and a spot in the NCAA South Regional Tournament.  The Generals were a perfect 11-0 in the ODAC and extended their conference winning streak to 31 matches.  Snyder was also named the Virginia College Division Coach of the Year in 2002.

Three of Snyder’s Generals were also recognized for their efforts during the 2003 season. W&L’s Susan Gaillard, Christine Gladysz, and Emily Wolfing all joined Carrington on the all-state first team.  Averett’s Courtney Peters, and Bridgewater’s Candy Baker were also selected.

Gaillard, a sophomore middle blocker from Charleston, SC, was a first team All-ODAC and All-South Region selection, while setting the school record for hitting percentage at .423 in 2003.  Gladysz was also named to the All-ODAC first team, as well as the All-South Region first team in 2003.  The sophomore setter from Palm Harbor, FL set 1,642 assists in 2003 for a W&L school record.  Wolfing, from Mt. Airy, MD, was a first team All-ODAC performer, an honorable mention to the All-South Region Team, as well as the ODAC Tournament MVP. The junior outside hitter spiked 462 kills on the season, and set a school mark with 485 digs.

Peters led Averett in kills (3.33 kills per game), and ranked second in the nation with a .452 hitting percentage.  The sophomore middle hitter from Henrico, NC earned All-USA South first team honors, as well as USA South Tournament MVP honors.  Peters was twice named the conference Player of the Week, and was an honorable mention on the All-South Region Team.

Baker, a senior outside hitter from Faber, VA, was named the ODAC Player of the Year and was also selected to the All-ODAC Tournament Team in 2003.  She tallied 435 kills, a hitting percentage of .321, and 330 digs for the Eagles, who finished the season at 28-6 overall.

Members of the second team include Briana Beckham of Sweet Briar, Jenna Williams, Amber Bradshaw and Erin Bradshaw, all of Christopher Newport, Jenny Gray from Shenandoah, and Averett’s Erin Moore.
