VWC's Murray, Travis Sweep VaSID All-State College Soccer Honors
 

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.—Virginia Wesleyan College sophomore forward Kelvin Murray was named Virginia College Division Men’s Soccer Player of the Year, while Marlin head coach Sonny Travis was named Coach of the Year, as voted by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Murray paced the Marlins with 45 points on 15 goals and 15 assists for the season.  He earned First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference and was voted the ODAC Player of the Year by the conferences head coaches.

Travis paced the Virginia Wesleyan program to 17 wins on the season and led the team to the ODAC Championship and NCAA Tournament.  The Marlins scored a first round victory over Eastern University in the tournament and finished the year ranked 21st in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) top-25 poll.

Murray led the VaSID College Division First Team All-State squad at forward, along with Bridgewater’s Matt Brock and Christopher Newport’s Nick Yannitello. At the midfielder spot, first team honors went to CNU’s Billy Lucas, Hampden-Sydney’s Marcus Jackson and Bridgewater’s Jonathan Williamson.

At defender, Roanoke’s Glen Hayman led the way, along with Hampden-Sydney’s Bobby Hillmann, Washington and Lee’s Peter Miller and CNU’s Justin Chezem. Virginia Wesleyan goalkeeper Sean Wheaton was elected the First Team All-State keeper.

Earning second team honors at forward were Eastern Mennonite’s Clayton Suydam, Hampden-Sydney’s Pat Whitehead and Bridgewater’s In Meang.  At second team midfielder were Mary Washington’s Brian Hargrove, Marymount’s Jim Richards and Roanoke’s Donny Smith.

Rounding out the second team defense was Virginia Wesleyan’s Caleb Hill and Chris Mills, along with Mary Washington’s Ryan Kish and Christopher Newport’s Steve Keller.  Eastern Mennonite keeper Tim Koehn was named the second team goalkeeper.

The Virginia Sports Information Directors All-State squads are nominated by and voted upon by sports information directors at every college and university in the Commonwealth.
