Hello and welcome to Mason! My name is Alexis Jenkins and I’m an Admissions Counselor here at George Mason University. I’m very excited to return to Mason as an alumna! I was a 4-year student at Mason and I have experience living on and off campus. I was very familiar with this school before applying; I’m a local girl, coming from Robinson Secondary School, and my mom went to Mason! I was in the Honors College and studied English with a focus in African American Literature and a minor in Japanese Studies. In May 2017, I graduated from Mason with honors. A few months after graduation, I jet-set across the world to Japan, where I taught elementary and middle school students as an Assistant Language Teacher in Omi Village, Nagano Prefecture for a year as a participant of the JET Program!
During my time at Mason, I was very involved on campus and took advantage of a lot of the wonderful opportunities this school has to offer. Thanks to the Student Involvement Office’s easy new organization start-up process, I founded and served for three years as the president of the co-ed a cappella group, Mason Some Noise! Starting in my freshman year, I was an active member of the Black Student Alliance. I shared my Mason spirit as a Patriot Leader (orientation leader) for one summer and as a Mason Ambassador (campus tour guide) for two years. In my part-time job as an Event Technician for the Event Services office, I provided technological support for various events around campus. With the wide-reaching global studies programs available to students, I was able to study abroad for a semester as an exchange student in Akita, Japan at Akita International University. Throughout my senior year, I engaged in ethnographic research on Hip-hop in Japan as a scholar in the OSCAR Undergraduate Research Scholars Program, and even presented this research at the National Conference for Undergraduate Research (2017) in Memphis, Tennessee. All of these experiences allowed me to connect with other students and faculty, helped me to learn more about myself, and secured Mason’s spot in my heart as a second home!
Mason opened so many doors for me, and I’m happy to be in a role through which I can help others figure out if Mason is the right fit for them! I’m very passionate about this school and helping anyone to find their place in our diverse and unique community. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about the application process, transferring, how to make the most of your time here, or what it’s like to be a Patriot!
Now that you know my Mason Story, let’s get started on yours!
