Child enjoys swimming lessons at the Aquatic Recreation Facility at George Mason University.

Learning to swim at Mason is fun for all ages.

Just Keep Swimming

You’re never too young, or, ahem, seasoned to learn to swim. Mason endeavors to build water-safe families by offering multi-level swimming lessons at our pools in Fairfax and Prince William counties.

We also offer classes in other aquatic activities such as master’s competitive swimming, water walking, aerobics, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, SCUBA, and American Red Cross Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor certifications.

In Fairfax

The Jim McKay Natatorium at the Aquatic and Recreation Facility on Mason's Fairfax campus has been home to numerous record-breaking swimmers, including Michael Phelps, Kate Ziegler, Tom Dolan, and Ed Moses. If you're a serious swimmer endeavoring to add your name to this impressive leaderboard, or are looking for a healthy low-impact workout for better health, you will notice a difference in your performance when you take a dip in these waters.

The pool has a number of unique engineered design features that minimize the turbulence in the swim lanes, making the most out of each stroke and kick. The competition pool is 25-by-50 meters and is surrounded by an all tile deck. The new wireless pace clocks make training a breeze, and the state-of-the-art automated filtration system uses ultraviolet light and easier on the eyes and tougher on germs than traditional chlorine.

The competition pool is the primary training facility for Mason's varsity swimming and diving teams, various local USS and scholastic swim clubs, and master's swimming. Be sure to check the lane schedule before you suit up.

The Recreation Pool is the perfect spot for aquatic fitness for the entire family. The zero-depth entry design provides modified access for wheelchairs and mobility challenges as well as providing a "toes on the beach" feeling of security for our youngest patrons. The six 25 meter lap-lanes are ideal for adding an aquatic regime to your fitness routine. This is also the location of our water aerobics classes, and private swimming lessons.  Swimmers and visitors can also enjoy the whirlpool while letting water jets relax their muscles, or they may visit the sauna to release stress and end workouts feeling refreshed.

Enjoy year-round aquatics programs in the largest indoor natatorium in Northern Virginia.   From group water exercise classes to lap swimming to water safety and swim lessons, we have the facility for you.  Whether you are new to the water, or an advanced swimmer looking to fine-tune specific strokes, or simply focused on getting conditioned, the Freedom Center will help you reach your goals!

The pool is home to several area swim teams, including scholastic, master's swimming, and private competitive clubs. You can also work on your conditioning or get ready for that bucket-list triathalon by participating in the SMART Lab, which will examine every aspect of your performance and build a customized plan to get you to the finish line.

If you want to feel the beat without feeling it in your joints, hop in to one of the center's acquatic aerobics classes. Zumba, water walking, and more are offered on a rotating schedule.
