Mason is...Driven to Serve

Yara Mowafy in Egypt

Mason graduate student Yara Mowafy studied for a semester in Cairo, where she interned with an organization that helps street children. As a Mason undergraduate, she co-founded the Student Meal Assistance Fund, which provides meal vouchers for Mason students in need.

Service Is a Lifelong Commitment for Mowafy

Mason graduate student Yara Mowafy can trace her desire to help others back to her childhood, when she and her family would volunteer at orphanages in their native Egypt. So when she sees a need, she takes action.

She studied for a semester in Cairo, where she interned with a nongovernmental organization that helps street children, and has worked at the Fund for Global Human Rights.

As an undergraduate at Mason, Mowafy co-founded the Student Meal Assistance Fund at Mason, which provides meal vouchers for Mason students in need. She was recognized by the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for her work, and presented her efforts at the Clinton Global Initiative University annual meeting in 2014.

As a University Life graduate research assistant, she took it one step further, starting a pop-up food pantry after conducting research and interviews on the home and food insecurities of Mason students.

“If I were at any other university, I don’t know if I would have been able to achieve some of the things I was going after.”
