Understand Title IX

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of gender under any education program or activity receiving federal funding. Sexual assault and sexual harassment are forms of sex discrimination prohibited by Title IX.
George Mason University, which has 10 schools and colleges located on six campuses — Fairfax, Arlington, Science and Technology, Mason in Loudoun, Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation, and Mason Korea (collectively, the “university”) — is committed to providing a safe and non-discriminatory learning, living, and working environment for all members of the university community. Mason does not discriminate on the basis of sex or gender in any of its education or employment programs and activities.
The university prohibits sexual assault, sexual exploitation, intimate-partner violence, stalking, sexual or gender-based harassment, complicity in the commission of any act prohibited by this policy, and retaliation against a person for the good faith reporting of any of these forms of conduct or participation in any investigation or proceeding.
Who Does Title IX Cover?
Mason receives federal financial assistance in many forms, including grants from federal agencies for faculty research. Failing to comply with Title IX or other federal civil rights requirements can result in the termination of all or part of a university's federal funding, including awards for faculty research.
Educational institutions are required to provide women and men in all disciplines with comparable resources, support and promotional opportunities. Title IX's protection is not limited to women, but protects the rights of both women and men. Title IX requires that males and females receive fair and equal treatment in all areas of education, including athletics.
Other areas that fall within the scope of Title IX include:
- Recruitment, admissions, scholarships and financial aid.
- Course offerings and access.
- Hiring, retention, and promotion of employees.
- Benefits and leave.
- Sexual harassment, including sexual assault and sexual violence.
When Should I Contact the Title IX Coordinator?
Any student, faculty or staff member, or applicant who has concerns about sex discrimination or sexual misconduct is encouraged to seek assistance.
Contact the coordinator if you:
- Wish to understand your options if you think you might have encountered gender discrimination or sexual misconduct (sexual assault, sexual harassment, stalking, and/or relationship violence).
- Need help handling a situation in which you are indirectly affected.
- Learn of a situation that you feel may warrant a university investigation.
- Seek guidance on possible informal remedies or administrative measures to de-escalate or alleviate a difficult situation.
- Have questions about Mason's policies and procedures.
