The Web is a massively useful resource for Mason; it’s hard to imagine doing the business of the university without it. And Web Communications, a unit of Creative Services, is an important part of the Mason infrastructure.
Luckily for Creative Services and the Office of University Relations, Will Rees, web designer and programmer, is on the job. His vision, enthusiasm, and willingness to help others learn how to use Web Communications programs are major reasons why he is the March Employee of the Month.
Web Communications works with university departments and offices to design, create and maintain websites. Along with this work, Rees keeps up with the latest in Web design and navigation to help his clients achieve their goals. Researching the best solution to a problem is part of his work ethic.
“Will is an integral part and key player of the Web Communications team,” says his nominator Rick Custer, associate vice president for university relations and director of Creative Services.
“[Rees] has shown vision in developing websites that port easily to mobile devices, where more and more people are accessing the Web,” Custer continues.
In addition to his regular tasks, Rees has taken the lead in developing a Mason app and training university users in WordPress content management. His ability to think on his feet is one that his nominators applaud.
“[Rees] uses his creative problem solving to bring solutions to the table or to seek out possible solutions where none currently exist,” says Kim Shriver, senior web designer and programmer and Rees’ supervisor in Creative Services.
His nominators repeatedly mentioned Rees’ dedication to his job and his constant effort to go above and beyond his regular work responsibilities.
Judy Morton, the University Relations office manager and a nominator, recounts how Rees set aside time from his own work to help her by creating an online office tracker so she could quickly determine who was in the office each day, enabling her to discard the outdated dry-erase board she had used previously. The creativity and willingness to help that Rees displays here is a recurring theme in his nominators’ praises.
“I know of very few people who are more deserving of being named Employee of the Month than Will,” says John Blacksten, director of Media and Public Relations. “He is the personification of what it means to be a Mason Patriot!”
“I work in such an amazing department on such an awesome team that being singled out is a huge honor,” says Rees. “I went to George Mason University, and it’s been an honor to grow a career at my alma mater.”
President Alan Merten will present Rees with the award on Friday, March 2, at 10:30 a.m. in his office in Mason Hall, Room 103. Friends, family and co-workers are encouraged to attend.
