Stephen Monroe, marketing and communications coordinator for University Career Services, is George Mason University’s September Employee of the Month. Monroe was nominated by Jennifer Pollard, assistant director of trends, assessment and marketing at Career Services, who cited Monroe’s commitment to George Mason students, his collaborative spirit and his enthusiasm in her nomination.
University Career Services is dedicated to providing students with interview training, resume workshops, and internship and employment opportunities. Monroe successfully rebranded Career Services and created a strong on-campus presence that resonates with students, employers and alumni. Through Monroe’s hard work to grow the visual identity of the office, students know Career Services will help them take the next step in their professions, Pollard said.
Monroe’s strong leadership and collaborative attitude make Career Services an honest and open environment for members to share ideas and voice opinions, according to his co-workers. Cloud Spurlock, marketing and communications coordinator of INTO Mason, said she is inspired by Monroe’s dedication to building community. Monroe leads the student marketers training modules initiative, which brings together marketing professionals from across the university to train students who serve in marketing jobs around campus.
“Stephen goes above and beyond to bring marketing and communications professionals together on campus for mutual benefit in our work with students and for a unique kind of collaborative professional development,” said Spurlock. “Through these connections, we’ve all been able to share ways to do our work more effectively and more efficiently on campus.”
Monroe’s passion to serve students and the Mason community is evidenced by his willingness to work on projects outside the department and initiatives to help students during their studies and after graduation.
“Stephen’s love of learning and utilizing his knowledge to constantly improve marketing strategy represents Mason’s value of ‘innovation is tradition,’” said Pollard.
“At Mason, our ideas, our dedication and our work combine to create something amazing,” said Monroe. “I’ve been part of a phenomenal team at University Career Services and in Mason’s University Life division. We do great work together, and that’s why I love it here.”
Monroe will be formally presented with his award by President Ángel Cabrera at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, in his office on the fifth floor of Merten Hall. Monroe’s family, co-workers and friends are all encouraged to attend the ceremony. Those unable to attend the ceremony may watch the Facebook livestream at www.facebook.com/workingatmason.
