Police and fire training exercises on campus May 21-27

May 14, 2018

As part of the Core Campus renovation project, Student Apartments will be torn down to make way for construction materials.  In advance of that, from Monday, May 21 to Sunday, May 27,  University Police, law enforcement, and local fire departments will conduct emergency response training at the Student Apartments on the Fairfax Campus.

Some training scenarios will include setting fires under the direction and control of the fire department. Smoke may be smelled or seen during these training exercises.  Law enforcement exercises will use “simunitions” (also known as blanks) and tools to breach doors and mimic emergency response procedures.  If you are near Student Apartments during this time, please respect all barriers and follow the instruction of police and fire personnel stationed at these buildings. You may see smoke or hear “popping” noises coming from these areas as part of the training. All training scenarios will be tightly controlled for the safety of the trainees and university community.

Signage indicating that police and fire training is in progress will be posted in conspicuous locations.  Any questions or concerns regarding this event should be directed to University Police at 703-993-2810 or the Environmental Health and Safety Office at 703-993-8448 or safety@gmu.edu.  The demolition of Student Apartments provides a unique opportunity for our first responders to engage in specialized training. Thank you for your understanding.

Respectfully,

David Farris, PhD
Executive Director of Safety & Emergency Management
