Based near the power center of government, Washington, D.C., Mason is known internationally for research that develops practical solutions to challenges in public policy, government, and international affairs. Our faculty consists of scholars and experts who seek to push the frontiers of conventional wisdom, apply rigorous analysis to complex issues, and make a positive contribution to the world.

  • Center for Advancing Correctional Excellence

    The center brings researchers, practitioners, and policymakers together to deal with issues that affect criminal justice and health systems. Its goals include advancing an understanding of how to improve outcomes from the correctional system and scientific knowledge about effective interventions; improving methods for conducting studies in justice settings and putting those findings into practice; designing and conducting original research that addresses correctional policy questions; and contributing to the support and academic development of students and early-career faculty at the university.

    A network of faculty, staff, students, university partners, and community members, the center is committed to advancing economic, cultural and social understanding of the Asia-Pacific economies. It supports curricula and research development, promotes exchange activities and cross-cultural events, and provides student mentoring.

  • Center for Energy Science and Policy

    Energy policy promises to be one of the key issues of the 21st century, as the world must mitigate climate change caused by fossil fuel combustion, while providing secure and affordable supplies of energy to support economic development and growth. This center provides objective analysis of key issues in the energy field that is grounded in original research. It serves as a center of gravity for the many researchers at Mason whose work engages them with these issues and connects them with decision-makers in the economy, society, and government.

  • Center for Entrepreneurship and Public Policy

    The center takes a three-pronged educational and research focus on entrepreneurship opportunities in the technology, international, and federal sectors, and places special emphasis on the role entrepreneurship plays in regional economic development by jointly sponsoring annual conferences on the subject in Amsterdam and Jonkoping, Sweden. Its wide-ranging consulting service works for clients in China, India, and the European Union on projects such as technology incubation and business development.

  • Center for Global Policy

    The center conducts research on such topics as foreign trade, democratization and state-building, and transnational networks, and analyzes specific policy issues for a variety of government agencies. Faculty work in four main clusters: conflict, terrorism, democratization, and state-building; international trade, finance, and international organizations; culture, opinion, and global policy; and information technology, learning, and development.

  • Center for Global Studies

    The center promotes multidisciplinary research on globalization and international affairs. Research themes include globalization as it relates to human rights, urbanization, education, and developing society. The center includes more than 100 faculty members with expertise in the humanities, the social and natural sciences, and information technology and engineering, as well as conflict resolution, public policy, law, management, and health.

  • Center for Health Policy Research and Ethics

    The center is a group of individuals working to develop independent research and thought leadership to improve health policy. The passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the continuing debate about its repeal, revision, and state-by-state implementation, provide the context for much of the center’s current work. The center’s members have expertise in insurance market performance and reforms, payment reform, incentive realignment and quality improvement in health service markets, health workforce, population health, patient and community engagement in health, equitable access to health resources, and transforming the U.S. health system to become sustainable.

    The center is a research and teaching hub focused on a wide range of areas including state and local governance, intergovernmental relations, severe fiscal distress, fiscal sustainability, municipal bankruptcy, state and local ethics, and the implications of demographics for state and local leaders. The center provides in-depth state and local fiscal analysis, weekly eNews reports on federal, state, and local actions, and a regular eBlog reports on breaking developments related to severe fiscal distress and municipal bankruptcy.

  • Center for the Study of Gender and Conflict

    The Center for the Study of Gender and Conflict (CGC) is dedicated to advancing theory and practice in the field of gender and conflict, while supporting the next generation of scholar-practitioners. It focuses on the gendered dynamics of conflict, including war, genocide, sexual assault and gender-based violence, and issues of political and economic marginalization. The CGC sponsors workshops, events, conferences, and student research opportunities.

  • Center for the Study of International Medical Policies and Practices

    The center facilitates interdisciplinary and international research and training activities within and outside George Mason University. It has working relationships with the International Society of Microbial Resistance, the U.S. Medicine Institute for Health Studies, World Medical Association, and the American Astronautical Society. Research partners include the Institute of Space Medical Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, China; and the Russian Federation and the Academy of Sciences Institute of Biomedical Problems, Moscow, Russia.

    The center draws on a substantial group of renowned researchers to examine the place of sport in American and global societies. It provides research and consulting services, academic programming, and critical analysis of key issues in sport, leading to grant funding and enhanced research and publishing. Current research topics include race and ethnicity in sport and the history and culture of cycling.

  • Institute for Immigration Research

    The Institute for Immigration Research's mission is to focus the conversation on immigration among academics, policy-makers and the public, including the business community and media, by producing and disseminating objective, interdisciplinary academic research related to immigrants and immigration to the United States. Research conducted by the IIR will examine the economic impact of all immigrant groups, with particular emphasis on the contributions of immigrant entrepreneurs with a high level of education or skills. The IIR concentrates on economic questions while adding a sociological perspective. The Institute for Immigration Research is a joint venture between George Mason University and The Immigrant Learning Center of Massachusetts.

  • Institute for Philosophy and Public Policy

    The institute brings philosophical analysis—the examination of values and the clarification of concepts—to the discussion of issues in public policy. Members address moral, legal, and societal concerns that arise in such areas as emerging technologies, international development, and global demands for justice. It provides expertise in the ethical and conceptual dimensions of public policy and complements empirical research from the natural and social sciences.

    The center recognizes that although regulatory science involves various scientific disciplines, as well as engineering, economics, and other analytic fields, its objective is to enhance policy development and regulatory efficacy. It works with local, national, and international organizations to define the field of regulatory science and its methods and applications to policy and regulatory practice.
