Here at Mason our researchers are attacking security from all angles. Engineers, scientists, and policy experts are building cybersecurity protection measures into new systems and retrofitting old, looking at new evidence-based practices for law enforcement, and finding ways to ferret out terrorists.

  • Center for Assurance Research and Engineering (CARE)

    Our multidisciplinary approach to cybersecurity encompasses the fields of technology, policy, business and leadership. Through partnerships with government and private industry, our innovative research is translated into practices and policies used in real-word settings. Our research includes security for distributed systems, mobile apps/devices, industrial control systems, and new technologies such as networked medical devices, as well as policies development for securing critical infrastructure and guidance for cybersecurity leadership/governance.

    Center for Evidence-Based Crime Policy

    CEBCP seeks to make scientific research a key component in decisions about crime and justice policies. The Center advances rigorous studies in criminal justice and criminology, and serves as an informational and translational link to practitioners and the policy community.  It conducts research on criminological and criminal justice issues, evaluations of justice interventions, and studies of knowledge translation.

  • Center for Infrastructure Protection and Homeland Security

    CIP/HS integrates law, policy, and technology to conduct comprehensive analyses and research, including security evaluations, educational initiatives, and recommendations to improve the safety and security of the United States and its allies. It publishes The CIP Report, a newsletter for professionals in industry, government, and academia.

  • Center for Justice Leadership and Management

    The center provides technical assistance and training for policymakers and professionals in the justice field. The center has conducted research, technical assistance, and training for such organizations as the Department of Justice, the Centers for Disease Control, the National Institutes of Health, the Navy and the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the State of Maryland. Areas of focus include policing, juvenile justice, corrections and treatment programs, and terrorism and homeland security.

    CSIS researches the development of expertise in the theoretical and applied aspects of information systems security, and is recognized as the first academic center in security at a U.S. university.  The Center is one of the National Security Agency’s original Centers of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education.     The nation’s first and only civilian university-based entity offers a comprehensive academic and research program in military applications of information technology. Research areas include communications and signal processing, command support and intelligent systems, and information systems.     TraCCC is the first center in the United States devoted to understanding the links between terrorism, transnational crime and corruption, and to teach, research, train and help formulate policy on these critical issues. The Center focuses on the political, societal and economic conditions that contribute to the spread of these phenomena, as well as methods used by criminals and terrorists to execute their crimes.
