FAQs: Reopening Campuses

The Mason community returned to campus in August 2021 for fall semester. We'll continue to provide information the Mason Community wants and needs about the process.

What food services will be provided?

Regular/standard fall semester hours of operations at all campuses started on August 23, 2021.

Retail restaurants open on the Fairfax Campus include:

  • Steak & Shake at the Johnson Center
  • Akeno Sushi at the Johnson Center
  • Express at the Johnson Center
  • Freshens at the Johnson Center
  • Starbucks at Northern Neck
  • Chipotle at the Johnson Center
  • Garbanzo at the Johnson Center
  • Einstein’s Bagels at Merten Hall

Will my parking pass still work? Do I need a new one?

Classified employees, administrative, and instructional faculty who do not have a permit:

Classified employees, administrative and instructional faculty who already have a permit:

  • Permits will not change and will automatically renew in September.
  • Any employee wishing to stop payroll deduction must mail their permit (and gate entry card, if applicable) to the Parking Services office at MS1G4. Permits may be returned at any time to stop future deductions. The process to end your parking payroll deduction will be initiated upon our receipt of your parking permit.

Will parking fees be pro-rated if I’m approved for part-time telework?

Parking fees are not pro-rated. There are many daily options for those who come to campus infrequently, as well as shuttle options.

Daily options include $3/day at West Campus, $5/day at the Field House, $9/day for Lot K and $15/day in the parking decks.

If you come to campus more than once a week, a semester or payroll deduction permit is a cheaper option. Check the the Parking and Transportation site, which has an overview of parking options (PDF).

What buildings will be open? What are the schedules?

Buildings returned to normal operations on August 15, 2021 with most buildings returning to a seven-day-a-week, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., schedule.

Will my employee / student ID still work? I was hired / enrolled during COVID and never got an ID card. What should I do??

Existing ID cards should still work.  For assistance with card access issues, contact Mason’s Card Access Security Office (CASO) or call 703-993-1004, and select option 2.

Student or staff who need a Mason ID should visit the Mason Card Office.  Find locations and hours of operation on the Mason Card Office site.

Will my office be open? Are chairs still covered in plastic?

All offices, classrooms, and common areas are on a normal schedule.

To allow full occupancy, chairs, desks, and other furniture will not be marked ‘do not use’ or covered in plastic.

Any remaining plastic coverings on chairs can be removed.

What is the Library schedule?

The Library website lists hours of operation. 

What will the cleaning frequency be in offices, classrooms, and common spaces?

According to the CDC, the risk of infection from touching contaminated surfaces is low in most situations.

Mason provides enhanced cleaning and disinfection, in addition to routine cleaning, in accordance with CDC Guidance.

High-contact surfaces in common areas, dining areas, classrooms, residence halls recreation sport and exercise areas, and other public spaces in campus buildings are cleaned at least daily, in addition to routine cleaning procedures, and they're treated with an EPA-approved disinfectant as needed.

High-contact surfaces include, but are not limited to:

  • Doorknobs/handles/push-plates.
  • Light switches.
  • Elevator buttons.
  • Restroom fixtures and surfaces.
  • Drinking fountains / water bottle fill stations.
  • Handrails.
  • Vending machines.
  • Check-out stations.
  • Payment pads.
  • Touch-screen information panels. 
  • Frequent-contact hard surfaces.

There will also be hand sanitizer and cleaning wipe stations in or near every active classroom.

How do we know if someone who is not wearing a mask at work has been vaccinated?

How does the expectation of three days a week in the office affect previously established telework/remote agreements?

Previous telework arrangements (prior to COVID) should remain the same with supervisor/unit approval. 

All telework agreements should be updated with Human Resources.
