Research Guidance

Follow Policies and Procedures

Mason implemented specific controls for research environments in response to public health precautions rolled out in March 2020.

With recent changes in CDC Guidance and Executive Orders issued by the Governor of Virginia, many controls can be relaxed.

However, all research conducted at Mason and at other places by Mason must follow policies and procedures outlined in the Safe Return to Campus plan.

  • While we retired the Request to Resume Research application process in June, we still require committee approval (e.g., Institutional Biosafety Committee, Institutional Review Board, or Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee) for work with hazardous materials or research subjects.
  • Research spaces should provide appropriate accommodations for those who choose to maintain physical distance. We should also support those who wish to continue wearing face coverings.
  • If you are working on projects at off-site locations, you must still follow Safe Return Plan requirements. Some sites might require proof of vaccination.
  • Research involving human subjects must comply with appropriate health precautions for the populations involved in the study.
