Spring Graduation Process

You must register for graduation. Visit the Office of the University Registrar's special graduation page to get started. 

Your name will not appear in the printed graduation program if you do not apply to graduate before February 22.

If you miss the application deadline, you must submit a Late Graduation Application form, as described on the Registrar's website.

You must apply to graduate even if you do not plan to attend the graduation ceremony.

FERPA Considerations

Students who have placed a confidential hold on their records will be excluded from the graduation program. If you have a confidential hold and wish for your name to be included in the program, the hold must have been removed by February 22

Master and bachelor degree candidates should arrive at 8:30 a.m. at Mason Pond Drive for procession assembly. 

EagleBank Arena concourse doors open for guests an hour before the ceremony.

Each ceremony is expected to last approximately two hours. Graduates and guests are asked to stay for the entire ceremony.  It is not appropriate to walk out before all graduates attending have been recognized and the ceremony has officially ended. If you are attending the university-wide event and can't stay for the entire Commencement, please go to the Center for the Arts Concert Hall to watch a broadcast of the live ceremony.

Graduation Fair and Caps and Gowns

Graduation at Mason is a traditional ceremony in which graduates and faculty wear caps and gowns.

For your convenience, the University Bookstore will sponsor a Graduation Fair, Tuesday through Thursday, March 5-7, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Johnson Center Atrium (in front of the bookstore) on the Fairfax Campus. Purchase caps, gowns, announcements, rings, and other items; have a photo taken in regalia; and pick up Commencement information in one location.

The Science and Technology and Arlington Campus bookstores will also begin selling caps and gowns at this time. Please visit the bookstore for details.

Those who miss or are unable to attend the Graduation Fair can purchase regalia at any Mason bookstore on a first-come, first-served basis. The Science and Technology and Arlington Campus bookstores will also sell caps and gowns.

You are required to wear the appropriate academic regalia.

Doctoral Candidates

Candidates must wear the approved Mason custom regalia. All candidates should meet no later than 8:30 a.m. in the Center for the Arts Concert Hall Lobby.

Please place regalia orders by phone or in-person at the University Bookstore by Friday, April 12, or incur a $25 late fee plus the $159.98 rental cost.

All doctoral rental regalia will be available for pickup from the bookstore starting May 1.

Returning your rental—You must return your regalia immediately following the graduation outside the Hospitality Suite located in the lower level of the EagleBank Arena at the bookstore collection table. If you do not, you will be charged the purchase price of $754. 

CancellationRefunds of rental fees are available from the bookstore to candidates who cancel their regalia rental before May 10. You will not get a refund after that time. 

Hooding Placement Instructions

Seating Information 

Guest tickets are not required for the spring degree ceremonies.

Seating is open and available on a general admission basis.

Doors will open one hour prior to the start of the ceremonies. We urge you to arrive at that time.

If Eaglebank Arena reaches capacity, the overflow viewing area will be in the Concert Hall on Mason Pond Drive, across Patriot Circle from the arena. Shuttles will be available at the South Entrance to transport anyone needing assistance to the Concert Hall.

Special-needs Seating: Seating in all sections of EagleBank Arena, rows E, F, and G are marked reserved for those with special needs. These rows are on the concourse level and have easy-to-access seating that does not require users to climb stairs. Ushers are stationed at each portal to assist with seating. Guests requiring special assistance may be seated with one other guest from their party in these easy-access rows.

No advanced notice is necessary to utilize this seating option. 

Wheelchair-accessible seating is available in the four corner portals, 4, 8, 13, and 17.

Personalized Announcements

Herff Jones: Graduation announcements may be ordered at the Graduation Fair (four-week delivery) or online at (two-week delivery), payable to Herff Jones.

Diploma Frames

Framing Success/Churchill Classics: Diploma frames will be available for purchase. For special Graduation Fair pricing, visit the bookstore.

Class Rings

Herff Jones College Rings: Special payment plans are available. Payments are made directly to Herff Jones. Discount is not available online

Balfour College Rings: The Balfour table at the Graduation Fair will have special offers for Mason graduates. Payments are made directly to Balfour. Special offer is not available online.

Photo Opportunities

A photographer will available for cap-and-gown photos before Commencement, May 17, starting at 8:30 a.m., at EagleBank Arena. Photographers will also be at degree ceremonies to photograph graduates.

Diploma Information

Most diplomas will be mailed to the student’s “diploma address,” which is specified during the online graduation application process. Diplomas are mailed within six to eight weeks following degree conferral.

Guest Parking

All parking lots on campus will be available for guest parking. Handicapped and special-assistance parking is available in Lot A, adjacent to EagleBank Arena, South Entrance.

Eagle Bank Arena Security

Guests are encouraged to arrive early, as EagleBank Arena has instituted a new standard security policy for all events at the facility. Guests must consent to a search of their person and/or any items they may wish to bring into the arena, including bags. Each patron attending will be allowed to carry one personal item into the arena.
