Student Graduation Speaker

The next Mason graduation speaker could be you! 

All prospective graduates are invited to be considered for the Winter 2018 Graduation student speaker honors.

Competition Rules and Requirements  
Entrant must be eligible to graduate in the December 20th ceremony
Speech script must be original and no longer than 5-7 minutes in length – no exceptions
Speech script must be submitted with name, college, and email address of the candidate
Submissions must be received by the Office of University Events by NOON on Monday, November 12
All submissions are judged by an impartial panel of members of the university administration, faculty, staff, and students

Some guidelines for submitting a competitive speech:

The competition is based on the content and the quality of the speech. The goal is to share and showcase your "Mason story" and how you describe your overall Mason experience and growth as a student and member of the university community.

We encourage you to: 

  1. Discuss all facets of your campus life experience
  2. Focus on your graduating class and your experiences together with an eye toward your future
  3. Engage the graduating class and their guests as a whole

Speeches should be able to be delivered in front of a large, live audience within a 5-7 minute timeframe. Speeches that require more than 7 minutes to be delivered will not be considered.

Once preliminary selections are made, those chosen will be invited to orally present their speeches to the committee for final selection. The total selection process should be completed between Monday, November 12 to Wednesday, November 21. Winter Graduation Speakers should be announced on Monday, November 26.

Coaching and opportunities to practice your speech in the EagleBank Arena will be provided to the selectees.
